to relate harmoniously

Resonance (Merriam-Webster) is the intensification and enriching of a musical tone by supplementary vibration.

If you are a sports fan you know resonance. You have been caught up with excitement in the final moments of a close game when the entire crowd is pounding in the stands. The frenzy is inescapable. It builds on momentum and carries you to the end. If you participate in group chant you know to listen and vocalize and vibrate, and listen to vocalize and vibrate, until all becomes one. The collection of voices envelopes you in something bigger- you melt and merge and grow through the group in a way you could not do alone. If you are part of a community you know the reverberations of resonance that enhance your life by participation.

Humans are social. As a species we rely on each other for survival, development and pleasure. We build communities, develop relationships and have families. As a species we have forgotten what it is like to be dinner and our survival takes on new dimensions. Social enmeshment and status are more crucial for us than for other creatures in nature who rely on strength and speed. The communities in which we participate are important sources of strength and inspiration. Ideally a community will enhance each individual experience while contributing to the whole. For many of us, the companies we work for have replaced religion as the center of community. Often the relationship between company and employee is one of dissonance rather than resonance. Resonance amplifies. Dissonance diminishes – all parties.

To find more resonance we must learn to stand on common ground and reach for similar goals. When we relate harmoniously our diversity of opinions, background and ideas can contribute interest and complexity to situations, enriching all. A recent study by Leisure Trends found that one of the primary discontent women in the Outdoor Industry have with their jobs is the lack of challenge. In a recession this seems like a win-win. Find the talented people in your organization and empower them to figure out the best way to navigate murky waters. You’ll increase job satisfaction with no out-of-pocket costs and chances are the financial benefits will be long-lasting.

Homework: look for the common ground in your relationships (professional or personal) and find opportunities for resonance.
